Ecommerce Website Development in India: Shopify and Custom Stores

GOSHU Digital offers ecommerce website development in India for brands that want an online store they can actually run. We build on Shopify when you want to launch fast and skip server upkeep, and as a custom Next.js storefront when speed and design control come first. If you already run a WordPress site, we also build on WooCommerce when it is the more sensible route. Payments, cash on delivery, shipping and GST are planned from day one, the way Indian customers and Indian tax rules expect.

Anyone planning a store here tends to ask three things: which platform to pick, what it will cost to run each month, and how to stop losing money on cash on delivery parcels that get refused at the door. This page covers the platform choice and the India-specific setup. For running costs such as plan fees, apps and gateway charges, our Shopify store setup cost guide works through a full first-year budget in rupees.

Shopify, WooCommerce or a custom store: choosing your platform

No platform suits every store. The right choice depends on your product count, who updates the store day to day, expected order volume, and whether you would rather pay a monthly subscription or own and maintain the software yourself.

Headless means a custom front end, built in Next.js, sitting on top of Shopify, which still handles the catalogue, checkout and orders. It suits established brands that have outgrown themes. We build those storefronts the same way as our Next.js development projects.

How the main ecommerce platforms compare for Indian stores
PlatformA good fit whenTrade-offs to know
ShopifyYou want to launch quickly, manage orders from your phone and never think about servers, security patches or backups.Monthly plan and app subscriptions. Shopify Payments is not offered in India, so Shopify adds its own fee on prepaid orders taken through Razorpay or other gateways. Checkout changes are limited outside Shopify Plus.
WooCommerceYou already run a WordPress site with traffic, want full control over hosting and data, or sell products with complex options. No monthly platform fee, but hosting, plugin updates, backups and security are your responsibility. Too many plugins slow a store down quickly.
Custom or headless (Next.js)Brand experience and page speed are central to how you sell, or you need something no theme can do, such as trade price lists or a product configurator.Higher upfront build cost, and changes need a developer. Usually paired with Shopify for products, checkout and orders rather than building payments from scratch.

A simple rule of thumb: if nobody on your team wants to deal with hosting or plugin updates, start on Shopify. If you already have a WordPress site with years of content and Google traffic, WooCommerce keeps everything under one roof. Go custom only when a theme genuinely cannot do what your customers need.

Built for how India buys online

A store that treats India as an afterthought loses orders quietly: a UPI payment that fails on mobile, a COD order to a pincode the courier does not serve, an invoice your accountant cannot use. These are the parts we set up and test before launch.

UPI, cards, netbanking and EMI payments

We integrate Razorpay, Cashfree, PayU or the gateway you already have an account with, and switch on the methods your customers use: UPI, debit and credit cards, netbanking, wallets, and card or cardless EMI where your gateway supports it. On mobile, paying by UPI should open the customer's UPI app directly instead of asking them to type an ID.

Because Shopify Payments is not available in India, a Shopify store pays a gateway fee plus Shopify's third-party transaction fee on every prepaid order. That Shopify fee falls on higher plans, so we check whether an upgrade would save you money as sales grow. Before launch we test successful, failed and refunded payments so no order goes missing between the gateway and your dashboard.

Cash on delivery without the losses

Cash on delivery still matters for first-time buyers, especially outside the metros, but every refused parcel costs you shipping both ways. Shopify does not charge its transaction fee on COD orders; the real cost is return-to-origin (RTO) shipping and stock stuck in transit. We set COD up with guardrails:

  • COD limited by order value, product type or pincode, so high-risk orders are prepaid only
  • Order confirmation by WhatsApp or OTP before the parcel is dispatched
  • A small prepaid discount or partial advance to nudge buyers towards UPI
  • Reports that show your COD share and RTO rate, so you can tighten the rules where losses are high

Shipping, courier partners and pincode checks

We connect the store to a shipping aggregator such as Shiprocket, or to direct courier accounts like Delhivery, so labels, pickups and tracking run from one place. Accurate product weights keep shipping rates right, and a pincode checker on product pages tells customers before checkout whether you deliver to them and roughly when. Order, dispatch and delivery updates can go out on WhatsApp or SMS, which many Indian shoppers check far more often than email.

GST-ready tax settings and invoices

We add your GSTIN to the store, assign HSN codes to products, show prices inclusive of tax the way Indian customers expect, and set up an invoice app or plugin so every order produces a proper tax invoice, with CGST and SGST for orders within your state and IGST for orders from other states. We configure the store; your chartered accountant should confirm the GST rates for your products.

Fast on budget phones and patchy networks

A large share of Indian shoppers browse on mid-range Android phones over mobile data. We keep product images compressed and correctly sized, limit the number of apps and scripts, and test on low-end devices, not just a fast laptop. Where your buyers prefer it, product pages and policies can be in Hindi or bilingual. If your current store already feels slow, our website speed optimization service focuses on exactly that.

Ecommerce projects we take on

  • New Shopify stores: plan selection, theme setup or customisation, products and collections, store policies, payments, shipping and launch.
  • WooCommerce stores: a store added to your existing WordPress site, or a new WordPress and WooCommerce build when you want to own the hosting and avoid monthly platform fees.
  • Headless storefronts: a custom Next.js front end on top of Shopify for brands that need more speed and design freedom than a theme allows.
  • Platform moves and rebuilds: moving from WooCommerce, Magento, OpenCart or a marketplace-only setup, with every old URL redirected. Our website redesign and migration process covers the SEO side step by step.
  • B2B and wholesale catalogues: price lists for trade customers, minimum order quantities and request-a-quote products for manufacturers and distributors.
  • Integrations: inventory and accounting tools, marketplace listings, WhatsApp updates, reviews and loyalty, chosen sparingly so the store stays fast.

How a store project runs

  1. Discovery

We look at your products, margins, how you ship today and who will run the store day to day, then recommend one platform and explain why in writing.

  2. Structure and design

Category and collection structure, product page layout and mobile-first designs, plus a clear list of what you need to supply: product photos, descriptions, size charts and policies.

  3. Build and setup

Theme customisation or custom development, then payments, COD rules, shipping, tax settings, apps and the policy pages for shipping, returns, privacy and terms.

  4. Testing with real orders

Prepaid, COD, failed payment, refund and cancellation flows are tested end to end, on low-end Android phones and slow connections as well as desktop.

  5. Launch and handover

We connect your domain, submit the sitemap to Google Search Console, set up analytics and train your team in English or Hindi on adding products and processing orders.

SEO foundations from the first day

A new store should launch with the basics already in place, because fixing them later means Google re-crawling hundreds of product URLs. We give products and collections unique titles and descriptions, clean URLs, product structured data and image alt text, submit the sitemap, and redirect any old URLs before the switch.

Ranking for competitive product searches takes ongoing work after launch: content, internal linking and technical fixes. That sits with our SEO services, so the store build and the SEO effort are scoped separately and you only take on what you need.

Online stores for Rohtak and Haryana sellers

GOSHU Digital is based in Rohtak, and we can meet in person in Rohtak by appointment to plan your store, look at your products and talk through how you ship. If you sell from elsewhere in Haryana or India, we work together over WhatsApp, phone and video calls, in English or Hindi.

Haryana's sellers rarely fit the standard D2C template. A textile maker in Panipat may need a wholesale catalogue next to a retail store, a footwear unit near Bahadurgarh a B2B ordering site alongside its IndiaMART listing, and a Rohtak shop simply a proper store with UPI to replace WhatsApp orders. We plan the store around how you actually sell; our web design page for Haryana covers the towns and districts we serve remotely.

Frequently asked questions

What does GOSHU charge to build an ecommerce website?

It depends on the platform, how many products you have, any custom features and the integrations you need. Message us on WhatsApp from the quote box on this page with your product count, platform preference and must-have features, and we will reply with a written quote in INR.

For running costs such as Shopify plan fees, apps and gateway charges, see our Shopify store setup cost guide.

Should I build my store on Shopify or WooCommerce?

Choose Shopify if you want the simplest day-to-day running and are happy to pay a monthly plan plus apps. Choose WooCommerce if you already have a WordPress site with traffic, or want full control and no monthly platform fee, and you are prepared to look after hosting and updates or pay someone to. The comparison table above covers the trade-offs, and after a short discovery call we will recommend one for your situation.

Can you reduce fake or refused cash on delivery orders?

Yes, though no setup removes them completely. We limit COD by order value or pincode, add WhatsApp or OTP confirmation before dispatch, and give buyers a reason to pay by UPI instead. The aim is fewer parcels coming back unopened, not switching COD off for customers who genuinely rely on it.

Which payment gateways can you integrate?

We work with the Indian gateways that support your platform, including Razorpay, Cashfree and PayU. The gateway account should be in your business's name, because that is where your payouts land. Shopify Payments is not available in India, so Shopify stores use one of these gateways and Shopify charges a separate transaction fee on those payments.

Will my store produce GST invoices?

Yes. With your GSTIN, HSN codes and tax settings in place, an invoice app or plugin generates a tax invoice for each order, showing CGST and SGST or IGST depending on where the customer is. Your chartered accountant should confirm the GST rates for your products.

Can you move my existing store without losing Google rankings?

Yes. We map every old product, collection and page URL to its new address with 301 redirects, carry over titles and descriptions, and watch Search Console after the switch. The full checklist is part of our website redesign and migration service.

Who owns the store, the domain and the customer data?

You should. We recommend creating the store, domain, payment gateway and courier accounts in your business's name from the start, with us added as a staff or collaborator account while we work. That way you keep full control of your customers, orders and payouts, whoever builds or maintains the store later.
